Is it just me? LJ will not load, so you get an IJ only post. *waves* I've been working 10 hour days ever since vividcon but tomorrow I finally have the day off. Unless they call me in -- that would make eight days in a row. I actually have more than one day off !!! I hope to catch up on some panel notes and things. Of course Mely has beaten me to the punch for some, so I'm not sure if it is even worth typing up those panels, and my notes were much less extensive for other panels. *ponders* I still haven't seen a bunch of vids. I should watch the dance vids, they always make me happy. |

Money is tight now; you know that, right? You see it every day in the bills. And so do the companies who aren't getting enough income right now to make their payments, and who then have to declare bankruptcy under Chapter 11 of the bankruptcy act. Some of the recent bankrupt companies: Mrs. Fields' Original Cookies, Hines Horticulture, Inc. (Irvine, CA), Trinity Hospital (Erin, TN, first hospital built by HCA Corporation, which owns and operates 179 hospitals and 104 surgery centers in 21 states, England and Switzerland), Stamford Center for the Arts (Stamford, CT), Linens 'n Things, Mervyns (jewelers specializing in diamonds), Boscov's (northeast regional retailer), and Finnegan's Wake Irish Pub & Eatery (Pensacola, FL.) And these links are just what's on page one of the news.google.com search for Chapter 11. Something I have not seen in all the talk about conserving fuel and rising gas prices and rising other costs is this: any discussion about changing the way in which architects and contractors design and build suburbs. I am seeing more 'town centers', aka apartments or condos located walking-distance from subways and amenities, but I'm seeing no fewer monster houses being built as well on half-acre lots (where the house is 3/8 of an acre itself, three storey, for two people). Where's the discussion? Where's the consideration of philosophies? Or are they just thinking the rich will still live in monsters and the rest of us will cluster in gerbil condos? And the Sacramento Bee appears to be imploding.Glaciers are disappearing in the Alps. Signs of the way people lived thousands of years back are appearing. In Rome, a battle of the bells.Arundhati Roy on the political situation in Kashmir. Another view from Tehelka. Reiki for veterans. I'm glad to see it's being used in more official locations as well as small wellness clinics. In more medical news: Pro-life misconceptions about contraception. And education is needed to decrease teens' ignorance about contraception as well. The Progressive calls t he Bush proposal to yank funding from hospitals and centers that perform abortions "a ridiculous infringement of a woman's right to choose and it's ridiculous meddling into the practice of medicine. How are you supposed to run a hospital when any employee can refuse to participate in medical procedures?" One person may be opposed to tubal ligations, another to vasectomies, a third to circumcisions, and yet another to infant inoculations.
What are you to do? Have two sets of employees—one team that’ll do everything and another that picks and chooses?
How ’bout something simpler?
Like the idea that if you’re in the health care business, your job is to give the patient get the best and safest treatment possible, as defined by prevailing medical standards.
Not as you, or George Bush, define it.
This points right at another side effect of Bush's push to give priority to health care workers who refuse to participate in health care: it's not just about abortion. It's about homophobes who don't want to treat AIDS patients. It's about people in pain and need having the door shut in their faces and being told they won't be helped. It's lies and damned lies instead of medicine. Huffington Post has more on the Department of Health and Hallowed Services. ( ignorance reigns here )You do know we are still in the 30-day comment period on these rule changes, right? Have you contacted any of the people at that last link, or your congressperson or senator about them yet? This link has a map that shows what each state requires of pharmacists concerning prescriptions for birth control.Roger Ebert reviews IOUSA. And this may be a comfy couch, but I still don't want it in my living room. Fish farming started (in the US, at least) in the early 19th Century, when hunter and wild-game specialist Seth Green realized that the area where he lived was running out of wild food, including fish in the local streams. He started the first fish hatchery in Caledonia, NY, to restock the fish, and his idea caught on. And now Treehugger features Snowcamp Aquaponics: do-it-yourself fish farming with zero experience. |

The Department of Health and Human Services (and what a deceptive euphemism that title is becoming) wants to funnel funding to anti-choice "crisis pregnancy centers" and make it optional for federally funded health care centers to provide contraception at all. This is a revised proposal; here's the AP report, here's the press release, and this link takes you to a pdf of the entire revised proposal, thanks to feministblogproject. There is a 30-day comment period, starting now. MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD IF YOU DON'T LIKE THIS. You do realize, I hope, that John McCain is entirely in favor of this change in health policy, right? He is on the record as being entirely against abortion, including in cases of rape, incest and severe health problems for women. And, just in case you male readers still feel all warm and cuddly about the guy, you need to know that he wants to reinstitute the draft to supply an unending line of soldiers for that hundred-years war he wants. More on that here. It's likely that he's also thinking along the neoCon line that involves removing 'hostile regimes' in the Middle East and elsewhere.By the way, those aren't Cindy McCain's recipes -- she "borrowed" them from tv shows. And who sponsors your news?Slate considers why mothers don't give their daughters the HPV vaccine.I am surprised that 78% of Bush's signing statements have raised constitutional or legal objections. Only 78%? We need to rebuild the US infrastructure -- before it all comes down. How many homes does John McCain own? Well, to be precise, none. His wife and her companies own this many.Oh, by the way, don't mention China's carcinogenic water. If it's mentioned, the person who says it might end up breaking bricks and hauling rocks as 're-education' for a few years. That's regardless of age or health. How is it that the Department of Homeland Security now feels it can track law-abiding American citizens when they are in other sovereign countries? Doesn't that count as some form of espionage? The Post's version here. There's hot bidding out there for offshore oil leases, from 47 countries who want 319 sites. But these are for ten-year leases, not something immediate. Since the shallow waters around the coasts are where many fish go to breed, we are also facing the possibility of a Dead Zone Diet if these waters are killed off. Your doctor wants you to eat more fish? Where's it going to come from? I have a narrow, sharp bone to pick with some medical advice that advocates taking smaller fish -- where do they think the big fish come from if the younger ones are eaten before they have time to reproduce? Chycho.com has been writing about oil, war and the Internet, and how they're all related. Confused? Don't be. This link considers what might happen if the current conflicts expand into World War III. Choosing which roller coasters to ride I don't often ride roller coasters. I don't mean actual roller coasters, but I mean mental, emotional, fictional ones. I am careful about watching shows without closed canon, I am careful about reading WiPs, I am very careful with which cliffhangers I subject myself to. I mainline entire seasons on DVD so that I don't have to subject myself to weeklong gaps between multiparters. I spoil myself just enough for my few currently-watching shows to know if their season-ender is a huge cliffhanger, and I won't watch that episode until I have the next one nearly-in-hand or already-in-hand so I can watch them as close to back-to-back as makes no nevermind. (And I've been reading too many stories with the Mitchell clan in them lately; apparently I'm channeling their vocabulary occasionally. Makes no nevermind?) I only drink Jack Daniels when I'm watching or reading Stargate. But there are some roller coasters I intentionally put myself on, and I'm very cautious and intentional about which ones I choose. Roller coasters mess me up; I know this about myself. But I also know that sometimes, I need to be messed up, because it's a cathartic kind of messing, and sometimes a little (fictional, emotional) mess fixes a bigger (RL, emotional) mess. It's rather like marking with a whiteboard marker as a solvent to erase an older whiteboard marks that won't erase any other way. I've kind of got some RL mess that I need messed before I understand it enough to try to fix it, and there's a difference between pampering with hearty comfort food and eating the spiciest thing you can stand to get the sinuses to clear, you know? *points to icon* The Man Who Fell To Earth was like that for me... I knew watching the film would really mess with me, and I did it anyway, chose specifically to watch it in certain ways, at a certain time. There have been other instances, too. And this week? I'm reading Synecdochic's SG-1 stories, specifically the series Broken Wings, and very specifically the new piece of that series which she's posting, six parts in six days: A Howling In The Factory Yard. You know that dull (merciless, already strapped in, no where else to go, must've wanted this or wouldn't be here, ohgod) grinding clackety-clack of coaster cars being hauled upslope? Yeah. *shudders* I don't often do this, but count me in. Synecdochic, as always, you build one hell of a ride. Current Mood: determined |

on a related note: pervy holiday cards FTW Oh my goodness you incredibly wonderful fannish pervs. I just found the mother lode of pervy holiday cards I've gotten over the years. *coughsputterGUFFAW* Now, there are a bunch of simply warm, wonderful Solstice / Yule / Christmas / winter greetings as well, and they're touching and heartwarming and I adore them very muchly, but these others... only my fan-friends, people. Only you would have sent some of these wonderful bits of shamelessly warming-other-things-than-hearts greetings: Santa in his sleigh flying across the sky while wearing womens' lingerie, shirtless biker boys, elves that make giant dildoes and bumpy prophylactics, lovely twinks coated in gold glitter and stars, hot naked men wearing nothing but santa hats... *laughterwheezemorelaughter* My fan-friends are the best EVAR. I'm watching Primeval on BBC-America, and the accents are driving me nuts. I am not good at identifying British accents per se -- I mean, I know they're from the Isles, but I couldn't tell you where, the way I might be able to with American accents. So, I'm asking for help; I *think* I'm hearing Scottish, received pronunciation (Posh), and about four others but I would really like to know what they are. Things people my age tend to not know Have you ever held a cylinder record in your hands? What about a camera that required not only film but also actual flash bulbs? Sometimes people I work with, whether they're younger or older than I am, are boggled that I know about these things, and are even more so that I've owned them. Apparently my being "young" means that people assume that my generation has little sense of history, or places little value in what came before. I don't think of myself as young... I've been coloring my hair to cover up stray grays for a couple years now. But today at work I raised some eyebrows by knowing who Grace Hopper was, when people ten years my senior had never heard of her. If you've never heard of her, here's your interesting history lesson of the day: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grace_Murray_Hopperhttp://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Grace_Hopperhttp://www.cs.yale.edu/homes/tap/Files/hopper-wit.htmlThis woman began her military service at thirty-seven years of age, and retired for the first time from Naval service when she was sixty. She returned to active duty, and retired again at sixty-five, and returned to active duty again a year later. She then retired again at age eighty, and continued working as "a senior consultant to Digital Equipment Corporation, a position she retained until her death in 1992, aged 85." Some bits of wisdom from Amazing Grace: "A ship in a harbor is safe, but that is not what a ship is built for.""Life was simple before World War II. After that, we had systems.""I believe in having an open mind, but not so open that your brains fall out."Bless fiesty, geeky, passionate women like Rear Admiral Grace Hopper everywhere... bless us, every one. Snapely Holidays Banner Waving Okay, so assignments have gone out for some fests already (I know!), and signups are currently open for such things as the Harry/Draco Exchange and the Snape/Lupin Exchange, with signups for Smutty Claus (the big HP het exchange, now back on LJ) starting soon. However, as one of the Snape cheerleader squad, I'd like to make an extra nudge in the direction of Snapely Holidays over on IJ - and new this year for all your Snape-ficcing needs (slash, het, and gen). Don't know why Snape/Black isn't getting enough love these days? Think Snape/McGonagall is the kind of cross-gen that really makes sense? Meant to sign up for Snarry Holidays, but missed the deadline? Already signing up for the SS/HG Exchange or Snupin Santa, but can't get enough of your favorite pairing? Still waiting for that serious, plotty Snape/Flitwick story? ( oh, wait...that's me *g*) Signups for snapelyholidays will be starting August 22. Choike: Oil companies in developing countries -- the people of Nigeria vs. Shell. The Tribune, India: Underground oil storage projectsTruthout: BP's neglect of the North Slope led to disaster. ( Did you know we had a major oil spill that went unnoticed for five days?</a>
<blockquote>
... Drilling in ANWR has been debated at least half a dozen times over the past five years. The issue is a cornerstone of President Bush's National Energy Policy. Bush claims that drilling in ANWR is crucial in order for the US to cut its dependence on foreign oil.
But if there were ever an argument against drilling in the pristine Wildlife Refuge, it would be Sunday's pipeline disaster at BP's Prudhoe Bay operations.
Just four months ago, the worst spill in the history of oil development in Alaska's North Slope forced the closing of five oil processing centers in the region.
Alaskan state officials said that as much as 260,000 gallons of crude oil leaking out of a pipeline in an oil field jointly owned by Exxon Mobil, BP, and ConocoPhillips blanketed two acres of frozen tundra near Prudhoe Bay - just a short distance from where President Bush has proposed opening up ANWR to drilling.
The oil spill in March went undetected for about five days before a BP oilfield worker noticed the scent of hydrocarbons while driving through the area, which led him to believe there was a spill from one of the facilities.
That spill was blamed on a corroded transit pipeline, according to BP officials.
BP has long been criticized for poorly managing the North Slope's aging pipelines, safety valves and other critical components of its oil production infrastructure. The company has in the past made minor improvements to its valves and fire detection systems and hired additional employees, but has neglected to maintain a level of safety at its facilities on the North Slope.
Chuck Hamel, a highly regarded activist based in Alexandria, Virginia, who is credited with exposing dozens of oil spills and the subsequent cover-ups related to BP's shoddy operations at Prudhoe Bay, sounded early warning alarms about the issues at BP's North Slope facilities.
Back in the 1980s, Hamel was the first person to expose weak pollution laws at the Valdez tanker port as well as electrical and maintenance problems with the trans-Alaska oil pipeline.
Hamel has said that not only do oil spills continue on the North Slope because BP neglects to address maintenance issues, but the oil behemoth's executives have routinely lied to Alaskan state representatives and members of the United States Senate and Congress about the steps they're taking to correct the problems.
Concerned that BP was covering up the shoddy condition of its pipeline at its Prudhoe Bay operations, Hamel sent a letter to Senator Pete Domenici (R-NM) on April 15, 2005, saying the senator was duped by oil executives and state officials during a visit to Alaska's North Slope.
